What is Port 25 and Why Do Some Cloud Providers Block It?

Port 25 is the default port used for sending emails through the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). SMTP is the fundamental protocol responsible for delivering email messages between mail servers. When an email is sent, the message is transmitted from the sender’s email server to the recipient’s email server using Port 25. For decades, it has been the standard for mail transfer across the internet.

However, due to its widespread use, Port 25 has also become a target for malicious activities, such as spam and unsolicited bulk emails. Spammers exploit this port to send large volumes of emails to multiple recipients, often using botnets or compromised servers. This has led to many cloud service providers taking preventive measures, such as blocking or restricting access to Port 25, to minimize the risk of spam originating from their networks.

What is Port 25 and Why Do Some Cloud Providers Block It?

Why Do Some Cloud Providers Block Port 25?

Cloud service providers often block Port 25 for several key reasons:

  1. Prevent Spam: Unrestricted access to Port 25 allows malicious users to send spam emails directly from their virtual servers. By blocking this port, providers can limit their network’s exposure to spam activities.
  2. Protect IP Reputation: If spam is sent from a provider's IP range, those IP addresses can be blacklisted by email filtering systems, which affects the provider's reputation and their customers’ ability to send legitimate emails.
  3. Mitigate Abuse: Cybercriminals may abuse cloud services to send phishing emails, viruses, or other malicious content via Port 25. By restricting access, providers reduce the likelihood of such abuses.
  4. Encourage Better Email Practices: Many providers block Port 25 to push users towards using authenticated SMTP relays on ports like 587 or 465, which offer more security through encryption and authentication protocols.

SurferCloud VPS: No Port 25 Restrictions

Updated on June 1, 2025: Due to frequent abuse of port 25 by many users, we no longer allow anyone to enable port 25, and this port is no longer supported.

While many cloud providers block Port 25 due to these security concerns, SurferCloud stands out by offering VPS solutions with no such restrictions on Port 25. This allows businesses and individuals who rely on sending legitimate emails directly from their servers to have the flexibility they need. With SurferCloud, users can enjoy full SMTP capabilities without the hurdles imposed by blocked ports, making it a suitable choice for those who need to manage their own email servers or conduct large-scale email communications.

In conclusion, while Port 25 is crucial for email delivery, its potential for abuse has led many cloud providers to block it. SurferCloud’s VPS, however, remains open to Port 25, providing greater flexibility for businesses needing unrestricted email services.

Our VPS does not block port 25; you can enable it yourself as needed. Via: https://console.surfercloud.com/unet/ufirewall.
